Maldives prez to hold underwater meeting

MALE, Maldives, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- The president of the Maldives says he and his entire Cabinet will hold a meeting underwater to demonstrate the threat of global warming.

President Mohamed Nasheed and his aides plan to don scuba gear on Oct. 17, descend to a depth of 20 feet beneath the Indian Ocean and conduct the meeting using hand gestures, CNN reported Wednesday.

Nasheed says the meeting demonstrates the danger the Maldives faces from rising sea levels caused by global warming and climate change. Most of the low-lying group of 1,200 islands lie just 4.9 feet above sea level.

CNN said that during the underwater meeting, Nasheed and his Cabinet will ratify a pledge calling on the world to slash greenhouse emissions in December at a U.N. climate summit in Copenhagen.

"The document will be in a water-proof plate pinned on to the table," Aminath Shauna, the deputy undersecretary in the president's office, told CNN.
