Canadian mom guilty in daughter's death

CALGARY, Alberta, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- A Calgary, Canada, mother was found guilty Wednesday of strangling her daughter during an argument about the teenager's legal problems.

Judge Sal LoVecchio found Aset Magomadova, 39, guilty of manslaughter, deciding there wasn't enough evidence to convict her of second-degree murder, the charge prosecutors had pursued, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Magomadova killed her 14-year-old daughter Aminat during an argument in the family home Feb. 26, 2007. The daughter had previously pleaded guilty to assaulting a teacher and they argued over her not wanting to attend a court hearing.

The CBC said Magomadova contended she wrapped a scarf around the girl's neck to try to get her to drop a knife.

Lovecchio rejected the self-defense claim and the contention the teen had a knife. However, rather than planning out the attack, the judge said the mother "in an impulsive moment, may have simply lost it."

Magomadova, who emigrated to Canada from Chechnya in 2004, will remain free on bail until sentencing Oct. 16.
