The missing family was about 40 feet from shore in Henry Hagg Lake, a reservoir in northwest Oregon. The water in the area is about 8 feet deep.
The dead were identified as Gabriela Garcia-Ixtacua, 25, Michael Garcia-Ixtacua, 13, and Jova Ixtacua-Castano, 42, all of Hillsboro, Ore. Jeremy Scholl, 3, Gabriela's son, was spotted unconscious in the lake late Monday afternoon by people fishing, and attempts to revive him failed.
Washington County sheriff's deputies, searching for the little boy's family, found picnic and beach gear, a leashed dog and a car in the parking lot. That set off a search of the lake that continued until the bodies were found Tuesday afternoon.
Sgt. Bob Ray of the Washington County sheriff's office said there was no sign the family had been victims of violence.
The drowning was the first in the lake since 2008. In recent years, children's life jackets have been available for free on a rack at the lake but there were no indications Jeremy was wearing one.
