Satanists in Oklahoma apply to build monument by statehouse

The monument would be next to statue of Ten Commandments

Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Satanists in Oklahoma are applying to erect a monument near the statehouse steps, arguing that a statue of the Ten Commandments should give them equal illegibility to build their own structure.

The Satanic Temple of New York informed the Oklahoma Capitol Preservation Commission of plans to build a monument that will cost $20,000 just by the statehouse. They said the monument will be built in "good-taste".

"We would prefer to see Oklahoma’s government officials work to faithfully serve our communities and improve the lives of Oklahomans instead of erecting granite monuments to show us all how righteous they are," said Brady Henderson of the Oklahoma branch of the American Civil Liberties Union. He said if state officials allow one form of religious expression they must allow the others.

"But if the Ten Commandments, with its overtly Christian message, is allowed to stay at the Capitol, the Satanic Temple’s proposed monument cannot be rejected because of its different religious viewpoint."
