(UPI) -- Two days before the 50th anniversary of the death of former American President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, current President Barack Obama will honor the slain chief of state's legacy.

Obama will start Wednesday by honoring more than a dozen prominent Americans with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This year Bill Clinton, Oprah, and late astronaut Sally Ride are among the recipients.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom's modern form was established by Kennedy and is the highest award granted to a civilian by the US.

Kennedy was assassinated in Texas and his death led to many conspiracies about who was responsible.
