May 15 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump called for the death penalty for cop killers Tuesday during an event at the Capitol memorializing slain officers.

Trump paid tribute to police officers killed in the line of duty during the 37th annual National Peace Officers' Memorial Service and called for stronger protections for those officers.

"We believe criminals who kill our police should get the death penalty -- bring it forth," he said. "We must end the attacks on our police and we must end them right now."

Trump invited to the stage the family of New York City police detective Miosotis Familia, who died nearly a year ago after she was shot in the face as she sat in her police cruiser.

"Your moms and dads were among the bravest Americans to ever live," Trump said, addressing children whose parents had been killed in the line of duty.

"When danger came, when darkness fell, when distraction loomed, they did not flinch. They were not afraid. They did not falter," he added. "Their immortal legacy lives on in each and every one of you. Today, every American heart bleeds blue."
