Police: Texas Tech student fatally shoots campus police officer

Oct. 9 (UPI) -- A Texas Tech University student suspected of fatally shooting a campus police officer Monday night is in custody, police said.

The Lubbock Police Department said campus police they made a wellness check on Hollis Daniels, 19, at his dorm room and found drugs and drug paraphernalia on the premises. Officers then took Daniels into custody.

"During this time, the suspect pulled a gun and shot an officer in the head," police said. "The officer is deceased."

Daniels fled the station and police put the campus on lockdown while they searched for him. He was soon apprehended and taken into custody.

The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported that Daniels is a freshman at the university.

Details about how Daniels had access to a gun inside the police station have not been released at this time. The fallen police officer has not yet been named.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott offered his condolences to the family of the officer and mobilized the Texas Department of Public Safety to assist the Lubbock PD.
