Trump to meet with returning congressional leaders next week

Aug. 30 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump will meet with Congressional leaders in the White House next week ahead of deadlines to raise the debt ceiling and fund the government, aides said Wednesday.

Congress resumes next week after a month-long recess, and must pass a government funding package by the end of September to prevent a federal government shutdown -- and raise the debt limit to prevent a default.

"The Republicans are in charge, from the White House to the Hill so the onus of governing is squarely on them," a Democratic leadership aide told Politico. "We expect to hear their proposal for getting done all that we have to get done in September."

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. will all attend the 11 a.m. meeting on Sept. 6.

Last week, Trump threatened to shut down the government if his proposed border wall is not funded. The threat revealed division among Republicans and unanimous rejection from Democrats.

The last government shutdown in 2013 was largely unpopular among Americans, as a poll showed 81 percent disapproved and 86 percent believed it damaged the United States' image in the world. A majority of Americans also blamed Republicans and the GOP-controlled Congress for causing the shutdown.
