Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Months after Samsung lost billions of dollars in a recall of a defective and at times dangerous mobile phone, the South Korean company debuted its Galaxy Note8 Wednesday, featuring a screen that wraps around both edges.

The smartphone, scheduled for release in September, features Samsung's largest Note screen yet at 6.3 inches. The company describes the edge-to-edge screen as an "infinity display."

The phone comes with a stylus called an S Pen, which can be used on the phone even when the screen is off to draw emojis or take notes.

Two 12-megapixel cameras are on the back of the Note8, offering a variety of zoom and depth options for taking photographs. The front camera is 8 megapixels.

The Note8 runs Android 7.1 and comes with Bixby, Samsung's new voice assistant akin to Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa and the Google assistant.

Samsung said it has tested the Note8's battery safety to ensure it doesn't run afoul of the same problem it had with its last Galaxy Note product.

In 2016, the company recalled the Galaxy Note7 after its lithium ion batteries became too hot, and in some cases exploded or caused fires.

"We have been closely working with Samsung to make meaningful advancements in the science of smartphone quality and safety evaluation. As a result, the Galaxy Note8 has successfully completed a rigorous series of device and battery safety compatibility test protocols. We look forward to maintaining our strategic relationship with Samsung and helping ensure device safety for all consumers." said Sajeev Jesudas, president of UL International, an independent safety science company.

Samsung said the Note8 will be available in mid-September in midnight black, orchid gray, maple gold and deep sea blue.
