June 23 (UPI) -- The remnants of Tropical Storm Cindy spun off a tornado in central Alabama, injuring at least four people and damaging a number of buildings and trees, emergency officials said.

Air traffic controllers at Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport observed the tornado around 12:45 p.m. Thursday, Al.com reported. People reported damage throughout the area, including in McAdory, Fairfield and Ensley.

In Fairfield, the storm destroyed a liquor store, an oil change shop and a KFC. Three people at the liquor store and a fourth in a nearby neighborhood sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

"Thankfully today's tornado in Fairfield did not result in any loss of life; my thoughts and prayers are with those who were injured," Gov. Kay Ivey said. "We will provide support to local authorities as they serve those effected by the storm and continue to monitor the weather situation across the state.

Fairfield Police Chief Nick Dyer said about 12,000 people were without power in Midfield and Pratt City.

The remnants of the tropical storm, which was downgraded to a tropical depression Thursday afternoon, has dumped several inches of rain on Louisiana and the Florida Panhandle. In some parts of Louisiana, the floodwaters were so high people used boats to traverse neighborhoods.
