June 14 (UPI) -- Uber Technologies Inc. board member David Bonderman announced his resignation after making a sexist remark at a staff meeting.
The comment came after board member Arianna Huffington suggested at the meeting Tuesday that one woman on a board of directors can lead to more women joining a board.
Bonderman responded, "Actually, what it shows is that it's much more likely to be more talking," The New York Times reported Wednesday.
Bonderman's remark came at a meeting to discuss a 13-page document Uber released Tuesday, outlining its plans to bring more accountability of its executives. The ride-hailing company is attempting to overcome a string of scandals regarding corporate misconduct, including sexual harassment issues and allegations of pervasive sexism and gender discrimination. Angry responses to his comment spread swiftly through Uber's ranks in emails to managers and to the company's human resources department, The New York Times reported, citing anonymous sources within the company.
"I do not want my comments to create distraction as Uber works to build a culture of which we can be proud. I need to hold myself to the same standards that we're asking Uber to adopt. Therefore, I have decided to resign from Uber's board of directors, effective tomorrow morning," Bonderman said Tuesday in a statement.
Uber CEO Travis Kalanick announced Tuesday he would take an indefinite leave of absence from the company. His departure follows an investigation into the company's corporate culture.
