The search followed the death of Lt. Patrick Weatherford, a 15-year veteran of the police force of Newport, a city northeast of Little Rock. He was shot while making a routine traffic stop near the city's Remmel Park, and died of his injuries after he was hospitalized, WREG-TV, Memphis, reported.

Arkansas State Police led the search for a suspect. Officials said police are not pursuing any other suspects.
