April 25 (UPI) -- The crash of a small plane in Connecticut killed one man on board and injured his son, Wallingford, Conn., police said.

Joseph Tomanelli and his son, Daniel Tomanelli, were practicing takeoffs and landings in the Cirrus SR22 single-engine plane Monday evening at Meriden-Markham Airport. They were attempting to land the plane when it crashed through a chain link fence, crossed a street and then burst into flames upon impact with an embankment, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters said.

Joseph Tomanelli, a local physician, died in the crash, and his son sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, Wallingford Police Chief Marc Mikulski said. Mikulski said Daniel Tomanelli was found yards from the wreckage, but it is unclear if he was thrown from the crash or walked away. It is also unclear who was piloting the plane at the time of the crash.

Peters said the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident.
