March 29 (UPI) -- Twelve people were killed Wednesday when a bus carrying a Texas church choir collided head-on with a pickup on U.S. Route 83 about 75 miles west of San Antonio, police said.

Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Lt. Juan Hernandez said the crash occurred at 12:23 p.m. on a section of highway that's an undivided two-lane road.

Three people were hospitalized with injuries.

The bus was carrying 14 members of the First Baptist Church of New Braunfels, Texas, back from a three-day retreat at the Alto Frio Baptist Camp and Conference Center. The church's pastor said all 14 people riding in the bus were seniors.

The condition of the pickup truck's driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, was not immediately reported.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, but Hernandez said police had received complaints of a vehicle driving aggressively in the area prior to the crash.

"We are saddened by the loss of life and our hearts go out to all those affected," Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement.
