March 24 (UPI) -- Amtrak's high-speed Acela train derailed Friday morning in New York City as it left Penn Station in midtown Manhattan.

The front end of the Acela Express Train 2151, which had arrived from Boston and was heading for Washington, D.C., derailed at approximately 9 a.m. as it pulled out of the station at low speed, an Amtrak statement said. The rear end of the train stayed on the track, but the derailed train scraped a NJ Transit train that was pulling into the station, causing some damage. The transit train safely arrived at the station, and passengers exited at the platform.

All 248 passengers on the Amtrak train were safely evacuated, and there were no injuries requiring transportation to a hospital, the New York Fire Department said, but NJ Transit officials reported several minor injuries aboard the NJ Transit train.

All service at the train station, a busy location during the morning commute, was suspended. NJ Transit's Midtown Direct trains were diverted to the Hoboken train station.
