Feb. 20 (UPI) -- The pilot of an experimental aircraft that crashed in Clark County, Ohio, died instantly, the Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed. {link: The single-engine plane crashed : "http://abc6onyourside.com/news/local/cleveland-couple-pleads-not-guilty-after-child-overdoses" target="_blank"} Sunday afternoon in a field near Interstate 70 in southwestern Ohio. Drivers on the highway saw the wreckage and called authorities.

The unidentified pilot, 25, was not from the area, but the plane was locally owned and registered. It took off from a nearby airstrip, Sgt. Richard Dixon of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said. He referred to the plane as an older model experimental aircraft, adding the weather was clear and no distress calls were heard.

Federal Aviation Administration records identify the plane as a home-built aircraft.

Investigative teams from the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to arrive Monday to determine the cause of the crash.
