Jan. 17 (UPI) -- The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee is expected to grill secretary of education nominee Betsy DeVos on Tuesday evening, particularly about her support of a national school voucher program.

Her hearing before the committee is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. President-elect Donald Trump tapped the Michigan billionaire to reform the education system.

He said he hoped she would "break the bureaucracy that is holding our children back so that we can deliver world-class education and school choice to all families."

In accepting her nomination in November, DeVos said "the status quo is not acceptable."

She's an advocate for the controversial national school voucher program, which allows parents to select which school -- public, private or charter -- they want their children to attend.

DeVos, 58, was chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party from 2003-05.
