HAMDEN, Conn., Jan. 10 (UPI) -- A majority of voters said in a new poll that they think President-elect Donald Trump should close his personal Twitter account upon taking office.

In the poll, conducted by Quinnipiac University, voters were asked the following question:

"As you may know, Donald Trump made controversial statements throughout the campaign on his personal Twitter account. As president, do you think Donald Trump should keep his personal Twitter account, or not?"

Sixty-four percent of the 899 voters surveyed said Trump should not keep his Twitter account as president. Of the Republican voters, 49 percent said Trump should keep the account, compared to 45 percent who said he shouldn't. Of voters ages 18-34, 71 percent said Trump should not keep the account, compared to 26 percent who said he should.

"140 characters may not be enough to tell Donald Trump just how much Americans want him to knock off the tweeting," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. "While the president-elect argues his missives inform, many say stow the phone."

Trump took to Twitter on Monday to respond to actress Meryl Streep's Golden Globe acceptance speech in which she called out the president-elect for mocking a disabled reporter during his campaign.

"Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a Hillary flunky who lost big," he wrote.

The poll took place Jan. 5 - 9, and surveyed 899 voters nationwide with a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3.3 percentage points.

Once inaugurated, Trump will receive the "@POTUS" and "@WhiteHouse" Twitter accounts from the Obama administration, according to CNBC.
