Firefighters battle 10-alarm blaze in Cambridge, Mass.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Dec. 3 (UPI) -- Firefighters from across the Boston area were called to the scene of a massive, 10-alarm blaze that engulfed multiple structures and forced a dozen people to evacuate their homes on a residential street Saturday.

The Boston Globe reported the fire was first noticed just before 3 p.m. by neighbors, including a newsroom employee who lives across the street. Witnesses told the Globe the fire began inside a home that is under renovation. The structure quickly became engulfed with flames that spread to a neighboring home.

WCVB-TV Boston reported one structure has collapsed, three others are involved and multiple cars parked on the street have been burned.

The Cambridge Fire Department said units from across the Boston area were being called in for support and as backup.

The Globe reported two police officers and one firefighter suffered minor injuries. No residents were injured. It was not clear whether the home where the fire started was occupied by anyone at the time of the fire.

Images from miles away broadcast on social media showed a massive tower of smoke stretching into the afternoon sky and residents several blocks away said they were unable to go outside without inhaling smoke and ash.
