WILLIAMSON , Ga., Nov. 18 (UPI) -- A World War I-era biplane crashed in Pike County, Ga., killing the pilot and a passenger, fire officials confirmed.
The restored single-engine plane, a Curtiss "Jenny" JN-4, built in 1917 and used as a training plane and a mail delivery plane a century ago, took off from the Peach State Aerodrome at the Candler Field Museum in Williamson, south of Atlanta, Thursday afternoon. It crashed into a wooded area shortly after taking flight.
Pike County Fire spokeswoman Anita Neath said witnesses told investigators from the fire company they saw flames visible beneath the plane before it crashed. The victims' names were not released.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.
