Prince Albert buys Grace Kelly's Philadelphia house

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Prince Albert of Monaco has purchased the home of his mother, Grace Kelly, in Philadelphia. It is the house where she accepted a marriage proposal in 1956 from his father, Prince Rainier III.

Prince Albert confirmed to People magazine that he purchased the six-bedroom, 2 1/2-story Colonial in the East Falls area of the city.

The sale of the 4,000-square-foot house closed Sept. 23 at a price of $754,000, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

It was listed at $750,000 when it was removed from the housing market Sept. 3. It had originally been listed in July for $1 million.

The city's property appraiser lists the value of the house at $605,000, taxable land value of $124,148 for the 0.69 acres and taxable improvement at $451,452.

The house is designated a Pennsylvania historical landmark.

The prince said he was traveling Tuesday to Philadelphia to discuss plans for the brick house where his mother was born. He told People his plans for the house could include museum space and offices for the royal family's foundation, NBC10 reported.

Kelly, an Oscar award nominee for Mogambo in 1954, spent most of her time in Monaco after her marriage to Prince Rainier. She died in 1982 the day after having a stroke and subsequently drove off the side of a mountain road, crashing her car. Her daughter, Princess Stephanie, who tried to take control of the car, survived the crash.

Princess Grace maintained dual citizenship in the United States and Monaco.
