Atchison, Kan., residents urged to shelter in place after chemical spill

ATCHISON, Kan., Oct. 21 (UPI) -- A spill at the MGP Ingredients Inc. chemical plant in the Kansas city of Atchison has led officials to recommend residents shelter in place on Friday.

The Atchison City Manager's Office said the chemical leak could be an airborne chlorine powder, though the company has not confirmed, KSHB Kansas City reports.

"There has been a chemical spill at MGP Ingredients between 10th and 14th streets south of Main Street. The plume is moving north of this area. Please avoid this area. Atchison residents: Please shelter in place. If you are not in Atchison, please stay out of town," the Atchison County Emergency Management said in a statement.

Some residents have reported seeing a white fog, KMBC News 9 reported. Officials warn residents that to seek immediate shelter if the white fog is near.
