Union builds 'wall of taco trucks' around Trump Hotel Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- A culinary workers union opposed to Donald Trump formed a "wall" of taco trucks around his Las Vegas hotel on Wednesday protesting his refusal to bargain with a newly formed union.

The protest brings together two of the more memorable parts of the campaign: Trump's controversial proposal to build a wall on the Mexican border and a surrogate's remark that failure to do so would lead to "a taco truck on every corner." The latter comment drew a sarcastic backlash on Twitter, where users wondered aloud why that would be a bad thing.

The protest, staged by the Culinary Workers Union, the largest union for casino and hotel workers in Las Vegas, recently held a vote to organize at Trump Hotel Las Vegas. Workers there voted to create a union and the result was certified by the National Labor Relations Board.

So far, the management of Trump Hotel Las Vegas, half of which is owned by the Trump Organization, has refused to bargain with the union over a contract, saying the unionization vote was not conducted properly. Workers at the hotel have been picketing outside for weeks.

The protest was staged hours before Trump was to appear at the final presidential debate, which is being held at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

CNN reported about 100 members of the Culinary Workers Union gathered along with six taco trucks to form the symbolic "wall" around the hotel. They rallied against his candidacy before the taco truck owners handed out free tacos to those in attendance.

The Culinary Workers Union has endorsed Hillary Clinton for president.
