MILFORD , N.J., Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Two people died in the crash of a small plane in Alexandria Township, N.J., state police said.

The plane, a Mooney M20, stalled during an attempted landing Sunday afternoon at Sky Manor Airport. It crashed in a residential neighborhood about a half-mile from the airport, a Federal Aviation Administration official said.

"The aircraft was apparently coming in for a landing and subsequently witnesses saw the aircraft go down," Hunterdown County Chief of Detectives John Kuczynski said.

A witness, Alicia Hughes, told NJ.com the plane's speed upon reaching the runway was excessive, and "instead of aborting the landing, [the pilot] continued to try to land and ran out of runway."

The plane then pulled up, barely clearing trees at the end of the runway, tilted and crashed, she said.

The pilot and passenger were declared dead at the scene. Neither was identified, and the cause of the crash was under investigation, the Hunterdown County Prosecutor's office said.
