Man adrift for 8 days found alive in Atlantic Ocean; mother missing

By Ed Adamczyk

BOSTON, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- A passing freighter rescued a Vermont man who had been adrift at sea for eight days, though his mother has not been found, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.

Nathan Carman, 22, was located in a life raft Sunday in the Atlantic Ocean about 100 nautical miles south of Massachusetts' Martha's Vineyard. He and his mother, Linda Carman, of Middleton, Conn., were reported missing Sept. 18 after they began a fishing trip from Judith, R.I., in a 32-foot aluminum boat and never returned. Linda Carman had not been found.

"She was not in the raft. The whole situation is under investigation," said Chief Petty Officer 3rd Class Nicole Groll of the U.S. Coast Guard's Boston headquarters.

Nathan Carman was reported in good physical condition, WTNH-TV, New Haven, Conn., reported, and is expected to be returned to land Tuesday by the freighter. The destination of the freighter was not announced.

The Coast Guard began its search the day after the two were reported missing, and expanded the search to a 62,000 square-nautical-mile area of the ocean before calling off the search on Friday.
