1 dead, three wounded in University of Illinois shooting

CHAMPAIGN, Ill., Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Shootings near the University of Illinois in Champaign have left one person dead and four others wounded, early Sunday, police said.

Police responded to a reports of a shooting about 12:38 a.m. Sunday morning, finding four shooting victims, Champaign Police said in a statement.

The incident started as a argument at an apartment party near the campus. When the argument continued in the street, and turned into a fight, shots were fired moments later. All four victims were bystanders to the fight, police said.

The person killed was identified as George Korchev, of Mundelein, Ill. Korchev was was due to start a career as a registered nurse at nearby Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville on Monday, the hospital said in a statement.

"We lost someone whose life mission was to help others," said Justin Konieczny, a friend and former high school classmate of Korchev's.

All four were rushed to local hospitals, were Korchev was pronounced dead about 1 a.m. The other three victims are reported being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The shooter fled the scene. Another shooting took place nearby about a half-hour later where another person was wounded in what police believe is a related incident.
