WASHINGTON, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- The Obama administration on Tuesday accused China of having "excessive" agricultural subsidies that hurt farmers in the United States.
U.S. Officials filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization claiming China's rice, wheat and corn crops were the product of "excessive government support" and provided an unfair advantage to Chinese imports.
"China's excessive market price support for rice, wheat, and corn inflates Chinese prices above market levels, creating artificial government incentives for Chinese farmers to increase production," U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman said in a release.
The complaint is the latest salvo in rising tensions between the two countries, with China being a frequent target on the presidential campaign trail for Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.
China followed all WTO rules and will deal with the complaint via WTO procedures, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said on its website.
Tuesday filing is the 14th the United States has made since 2009 against China. The United States is the world's largest exporter of agricultural products with Chinese food imports increasing in American markets.
