Woman arrested by FBI after allegedly burning blankets aboard flight

Idializ Gomez was placed in FBI custody when the plane arrived in Puerto Rico.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A woman was arrested by the FBI in Ponce, Puerto Rico, for allegedly starting a fire during a JetBlue flight from New York.

The FBI San Juan field office announced the arrest of Idializ Gomez on Tuesday. She was charged with destruction of aircraft or aircraft facilities, for which she could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

Gomez was a passenger aboard Flight 745, from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport to Ponce on Tuesday afternoon, the FBI said in a statement, and used a lighter to ignite two blankets and part of the control panel of an adjacent seat. She was detained byPuerto Rican police when the plane arrived at Ponce's Mercedita Airport, and was later placed in FBI custody.
