NEW YORK, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have at least one thing in common -- they are just about equally unpopular among registered voters, an ABC News/Washington Post poll released Wednesday indicates.

In the wake of recent news about Clinton's email use while secretary of state and increased scrutiny about the relationship between her family's foundation and work at the State Department, 59 percent of registered voters have an unfavorable opinion of her in the poll That is an increase of 7 percentage points in three weeks for the Democratic presidential nominee.

Trump, the Republican nominee, is viewed unfavorably by 60 percent of the voters, 1 percentage point down in three weeks.

Among all adults -- not just registered voters -- the differences between the two candidates are more pronounced -- 56 percent unfavorable for Clinton (up from 50 percent three weeks before) compared with 63 percent for Trump (also 63 three weeks ago). A total of 3 percent of the respondents had no opinion on the question for Trump and Clinton.

Clinton's unfavorability rating among all adults declined from 54 percent in July to 50 percent in early August after the Demcoratic convention.

The highest unfavorability rating for any previous major-party candidate for president in ABC/Post polls was George H. W. Bush's 53 percent in July 1992 on his way to losing his re-election bid against Bill Clinton.

Clinton's unfavorable numbers are pronounced in some of her core support groups: women (52 percent), post-graduates (51 percent), Hispanics (40 percent) and liberals (34). Her worst favorability is among Republicans (88 percent), conservatives (73 percent), white men (72 percent), whites overall (68 percent) and independents (66 percent). She is viewed most favorably among blacks at 80 percent.

Trump's numbers have been worse -- 70 percent in June and the highest at 71 percent in May 2015, shortly before he announced his candidacy. Among specific groups, 84 percent of blacks see Trump unfavorably. His other high unfavorable groups are Hispanics (80 percent), Democrats (90 percent), college graduates (70 percent) and liberals (85 percent). The only groups with a majority favorability rating for Trump are Republicans (72 percent), conservatives (53 percent) and white women without degrees (51 percent). Among all non-college educated Trump has 38 percent favorability.

The ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by landline and cell phone from Aug. 24-28 among a random national sample of 1,020 adults. Results have a margin of sampling error of 3.5 points.
