PHILADELPHIA, July 25 (UPI) -- In a rare unscripted moment at the podium of a national political convention, Sen. Al Franken, a Hillary Clinton supporter, and the comedian Sarah Silverman, a Bernie Sanders supporter, rallied Democrats to unity in Philadelphia.

Franken, a former Saturday Night Live writer and performer, returned to his comedic roots with Silverman with prepared remarks. When producers of the Democratic National Convention asked the pair to stretch for time, they ad-libbed several jokes, including a zinger from Silverman aimed at hardcore Sanders supporters who, earlier in the day staged an uprising on the convention floor, booing the mention of Clinton's name.

"Hillary is our Democratic nominee and I will proudly vote for her. It's so inspiring. Just a few years ago she was a secretary and now she's going to be president. I mean, come on, it's like she's the only person overqualified for a job as the president," Silverman said, joking about Clinton's time as secretary of state.

She then went on to link Sanders and Clinton.

"I will vote for Hillary with gusto as I continue to be inspired and moved to action by the ideals set forth by Bernie, who will never stop fighting for us. I am proud of being part of Bernie's movement and a vital part of that movement is making sure Hillary Clinton is our next president of the United States. Boo-yah. Bobobouey," Silverman said, closing her prepared remarks.

She then glanced off camera, where she apparently got the signal to keep talking as Franken stood at her side.

"Can I just say, to the Bernie-or-bust people, you're being ridiculous. They told us to stretch so I figured I'd add that."

Franked chimed in as the hall erupted in cheers.

"This is what you did. This is a comedian. This is the power of comedy," Franken said.

Silverman ended the clip with another laugh-getter: "Thank god they can fix this in post."
