Tropical Storm Darby bearing down on Hawaii

HONOLULU, July 23 (UPI) -- Tropical Storm Darby is nearing landfall on the eastern short of the Big Island of Hawaii, bringing heavy rain and a potential for flooding and landslides, meteorologists said.

Darby could bring as much as 8 inches of rain to the Big Island, but will diminish in intensity as it passes over the remainder of the island chain through Monday. Hawaii's other islands could see 2-4 inches of rain, enough to cause localized flash floods in some locations.

The storm could bring some much-needed rainfall to some parts of the island state that have experienced drought conditions this year, according to Accuweather.com.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Darby will have sustained winds of 40 mph, with gusts reaching 50 mph.
