LOS ANGELES, July 14 (UPI) -- A Chinese businessman has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison for hacking U.S. military information for the Chinese military, authorities said Wednesday.

Su Bin, 51, pleaded guilty to helping the Chinese military steal technical data about U.S. military equipment between 2008 and 2014. Bin was sentenced in Los Angeles to three years and ten months in prison and fined $10,000.

Canada authorities arrested Bin in 2014 and extradited him to the United States.

The Chinese government denied any involvement with Bin or hacking of U.S. military information, but Bin was the first to acknowledge Chinese economic cyberespionage.

Assistant Attorney General for National Security John P. Carlin called the nearly four-year sentence "just punishment."

"These activities have serious consequences for the national security of our country and the safety of the men and women of our armed services," Carlin said in a statement. "This prison sentence reinforces our commitment to ensure that hackers, regardless of state affiliation, are held accountable for their criminal conduct."
