NEW YORK, June 7 (UPI) -- House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi endorsed Hillary Clinton for president on the day of her home state's Democratic primary Tuesday in California.

Appearing on ABC's Good Morning America, Pelosi said, "I'm a voter in California and I have voted for Hillary Clinton for president of the United States and proud to endorse her for that position."

Pelosi, who represents the 12th congressional district in San Francisco, is a superdelegate to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia next month.

CNN and NBC on Monday night said Clinton is projected to have enough delegates and superdelegates to secure Democratic nomination.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vt., calls the declaration a "a rush to judgement" and hopes to win over superdelegates who have said they'll vote for Clinton.

Pelosi said Sanders "knows better than anyone what's on the line in the election and that we at some point have to unify."

Pelosi, one of the last major Democratics to make a presidential endorsement, did not formally endorse Barack Obama in the 2008 Democratic primary against Clinton.

On Tuesday, she told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos that it's "pretty exciting" to see a major political party's first female presidential nominee.

"I believe that she will walk into that Oval Office one of the best-prepared people to do so in our country's history, however, it's because she's the best not because she's a woman," Pelosi said of the former secretary of state and U.S. senator.
