LOS ANGELES, May 24 (UPI) -- A brush fire in the Los Angeles area spread to about 183 acres on Monday in the hills over Lake View Terrace as hundreds of firefighters battle the blaze.

The fire, called the Wheatland fire because it began near Wheatland Avenue, was first reported at about 2:20 p.m. before it spread into the Angeles National Forest. An investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched.

The fire was about 35 percent contained as of 7:30 p.m. local time Monday. Strong winds reaching 19 mph fanned the flames. No homes or structures were threatened but power lines were in the area. No injuries or evacuations have occurred.

The U.S. Forest Service took over firefighting efforts and the Los Angeles Fire Department began playing an assisting role due to jurisdiction as the blaze was confined to the Angeles National Forest. A smoke advisory over unhealthy air quality was issued for residents in the eastern half of the San Fernando Valley and in the western parts of the San Gabriel Valley.

Officials predict the fire will be fully contained by Tuesday evening or possibly earlier with the help of morning light rain.
