GREENVILLE , S.C., May 13 (UPI) -- Greenville, S.C., school officials said a student hospitalized with a gun injury Friday had brought the gun to school and accidentally shot himself, alerting nearby schools to go on lockdown.
The schools were initially put on lockdown out of fear the incident may have been an active shooter incident. The unidentified student, it was later revealed, had possession of the gun, which went off accidentally.
The student was shot in the cafeteria of Southside High School and was hospitalized. The wounded student was conscious and talking before being transported to the hospital, but the extent of the student's injuries was not clear.
Southside High School and nearby Thomas E. Kerns Elementary School remained on lockdown, and Blythe Elementary School and Grover Elementary School began partial lockdown protocols.
Police established a perimeter around Southside High School, and later issued procedures for releasing students who were to be picked up by parents and guardians.
