Trump tells West Virginia supporters they don't need to vote in primary

CHARLESTON, W.Va., May 6 (UPI) -- Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump told supporters at a rally in West Virginia on Friday they don't need to bother going to the polls in their state's primary next week.

Trump made the comments two days after effectively locking up the GOP nomination when his last two rivals dropped out of the race. However Trump still does not have enough delegates to win the nomination outright.

It's widely expected that, without any real competition, Trump will win the 200 or so delegates he needs to lock up the race as the final nine states vote over the next month.

"You know, you don't have to vote anymore," Trump said at the rally in Charleston, W.V. "Save your vote for the general election, OK? Forget this one -- the primary is done."

Trump lamented the end of the primary season for all intents and purposes, saying he had fun competing in different states for days or weeks at a time.

"I actually wish the primaries were not over. It's no fun this way," he told the crowd of about 13,000. "I want the primaries to keep going, but everybody's out. I'm the only one left. That's OK, right?"
