JACKSONVILLE, Fla., April 29 (UPI) -- A Florida rookie police officer has been fired and charged with battery for punching a handcuffed woman in custody multiple times, police said.

Officer Akinyemi Borisade, 26, who had been with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office for a year, arrested a woman at a bar for trespassing and resisting arrest, Undersheriff Pat Ivey said.

The woman, Mayra Martinez, allegedly tried to bite and kick officers as they tried to escort her from the bar, where she was a new employee. After she was placed in the police patrol car she tried to kick out the window, police said.

But when Martinez was booked at the jail, closed circuit TV cameras captured Martinez, while still handcuffed, kicking at Borisade. The officer then turned and repeatedly punched Martinez.

"He could have turned her around and held her in a transporting position that they are trained in back over to the location to wait by the door," Ivey said. "He could have stood there with her, but there was no need to strike her."

Other officers who witnessed the incident reported it to their superiors and Jacksonville police were investigating. It is not known if the officers who saw the incident but did not stop it are being investigated.
