Tornadoes, flooding pummel Deep South; Georgia, South Carolina under threat today

CORINTH , Miss., April 1 (UPI) -- A teenager in Mississippi died in a car wreck as tornadoes, heavy rain and flash floods overwhelmed several southern states.

The strong weather system is moving east, where tornado watches have been issued through at least Friday afternoon in dozens of counties in Georgia and South Carolina on the front's leading edge. Flood and flash flood watches stretch farther west into Louisiana.

Henry Kirkpatrick posted video to Facebook Friday morning, showing torrential rains and very strong winds blowing near Warner Robins, Ga. A tornado siren can be heard blaring in the background.

Tornadoes were reported in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi on Thursday evening. The National Weather Service reported downed trees and structural damage to homes, probably caused by a tornado, in Thomasville, Ala., and an observed tornado at the Alabama-Tennessee border.

Hail and flash flooding were reported in southwestern Mississippi. A woman was rescued from the roof of her flooded car in Wilkinson County, Miss., and floodwaters entered homes in Leflore and Sunflower counties.

About 5,000 Mississippi residents were without electrical power on Friday morning, utility companies said.

Photos posted to social media showed significant damage from high winds and tornadoes. One photo showed a home crushed by a large tree in Millport, Miss.

The only reported fatality was in Tishomingo County, Miss., where a vehicle driven by William McMahan, 18, slid on a rainy road surface and crashed. The Corinth, Miss., Daily Corinthian reported McMahan was on his way to school at the time of the accident.

In Harned, Ky., the roof of Breckinridge County Middle School was torn off by strong winds, and WDRB-TV, Louisville, reported that two people were injured when mobile homes at a Harned trailer park overturned.

Tornadoes in Tulsa, Okla., damaged buildings Wednesday in a one-square-mile area, including a church, which saw its roof collapse.

The storm weakened overnight but is moving eastward Friday, bringing severe weather to Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas.
