LOS ANGELES, March 21 (UPI) -- Two hikers found a human skull in a remote area in Griffith Park, near the Hollywood sign in California, police said.

The skull, found at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, is not believed to be part of a larger crime scene and police said it is likely several years old.

Investigators returned Sunday to continue examining the site, said Los Angeles Police Lt. Ryan Schatz. No other body parts were found.

This isn't the first time human remains have been found at the park.

In 2010, another skull was found. In 2012, the discovery of various body parts led to the conviction of a man who had killed his boyfriend and was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

Police have not said whether the new discovery could be related to either of the previous two incidents.
