EULESS, Texas, March 1 (UPI) -- A police officer and suspect were both killed in a shootout at a park in Euless, near Forth Worth, Texas, Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
Euless police responded to a call of shots fired in J.A. Carr Park. As they arrived the suspect allegedly opened fire.
One of the responding officers was shot and the suspect was shot multiple times, Euless Police Chief Michael Brown said. Both were pronounced dead at local hospitals. Neither was identified.
The shooting reportedly took place next to an elementary school, which immediately was placed in lockdown. The lockdown was lifted about 20 minutes later, school district officials said.
The unidentified officer is the second to die in the line of duty in the town's history. The first was killed by a drunk driver in 1982, city officials said.
