GLENDALE, Ariz., Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Two teenage girls were found dead at a high school in greater Phoenix on Friday, prompting police to investigate how they died.

Police initially called it an "isolated incident" at Independence High School in Glendale, and news reports indicated the girls may have died from gunshot wounds.

Fox 10 Phoenix reported that a weapon was found beside the girls' bodies and said they died as the result of a "double shooting.". The girls were 15-year-old sophomores.

"Police have secured the campus. There is no active shooter on campus. The investigation is ongoing," the high school said on its Facebook page. "The campus remains on lock down and no one will be allowed to enter or exit the campus until the police have lifted the lock down and ensured the safety of the school."

The school, located about 15 miles outside Phoenix, is on lockdown. It has more than 2,000 students and is located in a largely residential neighborhood.
