RIVERDALE, Ga., Feb. 12 (UPI) -- A Riverdale, Ga., police officer was shot and killed while attempting to serve a no-knock warrant as part of a narcotics investigation.

Maj. Greg Barney, a 25-year veteran of the department located about 10 miles south of Atlanta, was not wearing a protective vest when he was shot twice in the arm and torso. A suspect tried to flee and was shot, police said. The suspect was in critical condition.

Barney was transported to Southern Regional Medical Center in critical condition and underwent surgery. He later died.

Riverdale Police Chief Todd Spivey said it is common for members of the department's administrative staff to not wear a vest.

"You'll notice I don't have mine on," he said.

Police said Barney was part of a team serving a warrant at an apartment complex. Investigators said the suspect ran out a back door of the apartment and opened fire.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the shooting.
