ARLINGTON, Texas, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Former Texas Congressman and Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul said the demise of his son's presidential campaign is because voters listen to candidates with "magical answers."

"Conditions are different right now and unfortunately, people are scared and are much more willing to listen to people who have magical answers -- 'I'm going to take care of you, just listen to me and we know the answers,'" Paul told KERA on Friday. "There's a lot of demagoguing going on, so it's not easy to present the case of liberty where people assume the responsibility for themselves."

Weeks ago, Paul had expressed some doubt about his son's chances for the Republican presidential nomination. In an interview with NewsMax, Paul was asked if it was realistic that Donald Trump would win the party's nomination.

"At this point, it certainly is realistic," Paul replied.

Paul later clarified his remarks with Politico, calling the question "poorly worded" and voicing support for his son.

"Rand is going to surprise everybody because freedom is popular and when it matters voters won't cast their lot with an authoritarian like Trump," he wrote in a statement.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., dropped out of the race earlier this week after a weak showing in Iowa and months of low polling. He faces challengers from both parties for his Senate seat.
