NEW YORK, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Comedian Larry David has been hailed for his dead-on impersonation of Sen. Bernie Sanders on SNL, but this week, he'll have competition from the senator himself.

The Sanders campaign told CNN they were headed to New York City this weekend "to be ready if SNL calls." Bloomberg confirmed later Friday afternoon that SNL did indeed call.

This season, Donald Trump and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have both appeared alongside their doppelgangers on SNL.

Rob Klein, co-head writer for SNL told Vulture earlier this week that David's casting as Sanders was a coincidence.

"It was a case of massive parallel thinking, including the thinking of Larry David himself," Klein said. Both the writers and David wanted him to play Sanders, but David beat them to the punch and reached out to show-runner Lorne Michaels.
