Trump trolls Cruz by playing 'Born in the USA' at rallies

WASHINGTON, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Donald Trump has added Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A" to his rally playlist, an apparent jab at opponent Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who continues to grapple with questions about his citizenship.

Cruz was born in Canada, but his mother was an American citizen, which granted him citizenship at birth. However, the issue of whether that qualifies him as a "natural born citizen," as the Constitution requires to hold the office of president, has not been addressed by the courts. The term is not even defined in the Constitution.

Cruz and Trump, among others, are seeking the Republican nomination for president.

Cruz has gone to great lengths to eliminate any doubts about his citizenship. In 2013, upon winning his Senate seat, he released his birth certificate.

In 2014, he renounced his Canadian citizenship. Last week, after Trump reopened the issue, Cruz released his mother's birth certificate showing that she was born in the state of Delaware.

Since Trump has brought up Cruz's citizenship, other politicians have joined Trump in wondering whether Cruz qualifies as a "natural born citizen" -- even Arizona Sen. John McCain, who was born in Panama.

Trump was among the loudest voices questioning whether Barack Obama was a natural born U.S. citizen.

As for Springsteen, he has rebuffed politicians in the past for using the song at campaign events. Most notably, he rejected President Ronald Reagan's request to use the song at rallies. Republicans Bob Dole and Pat Buchanan both used the song without permission until The Boss put a stop to that. The Asbury Park Press reported Springsteen did not respond to a request for comment.
