Report: San Bernardino shooter Malik sent extremist Facebook messages in 2012

WASHINGTON, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- The FBI has reportedly discovered that Tashfeen Malik, who police say carried out the San Bernardino massacre along with husband Syed Rizwan Farook, sent at least two private messages on Facebook where she pledged support for Islamic jihad and stated she would join the fight in the future.

According to two top anonymous federal law enforcement, Malik sent the messages to a small group of Pakistani friends in 2012 and 2014, the Los Angeles Times reported.

FBI agents recovered two Facebook messages as they investigated whether Malik and Farook received any direct encouragement, financial support or specific instructions from any foreign terrorist organizations, such as the Islamic State.

The new details indicate U.S. security and intelligence agencies missed warnings on social media that Malik was a potential threat before she entered the United States on a K-1 fiancee visa in 2014. The messages were written in Urdu, an official Pakistani language.

Immigration officials don't usually review social media posts as part of background checks and most of the process is spent on vetting against marriage fraud.

Malik and Farook killed at least 14 people Dec. 2 during a county health department holiday party in Southern California. The couple reportedly shared radical Islamist sentiments and supported the Islamic State.

NBC News reported the San Bernardino massacre cost about $4,500 during an evaluation of the pre-tax cost of guns and explosives assembled by Malik and Farook.
