ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- The newly elected mayor of Juneau, Alaska, was found dead in his home, one month after taking office.

Greg Fisk, 70, was found dead by his adult son about 3:30 p.m. Monday local time. Police would not speculate on the cause of death, saying it is under investigation.

However, some townspeople are speculating he died in an assault. Police said they are exploring every possible occurrence in the death, but ruled out suicide and a link to a spate of murders in the city of about 32,000. There was also no sign of forced entry into his home.

"JPD is aware of rumors that an assault occurred in connection with Fisk's death. Those rumors are speculation," the police department said. "Detectives are actively investigating facts of the incident and all evidence is being preserved and documented."

However, police said there is no sign of suicide. They found no gunshot wounds or signs of drug use, but Fisk did suffer some injuries. Police would not elaborate on the nature of the injuries, but believe it might have been an accident.

JPD Chief Bryce Johnson said he didn't want to speculate about how Fisk died until the autopsy results come back perhaps next week.

"We can't rule anything out at this point," Johnson said. "Every time we have an unattended death, we always assume something bad happened. So we'll investigate everything until we're able to rule it all out."

Fisk was elected in October, beating incumbent Merrill Sanford with 65.9 percent of the vote.
