AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Texas Gov. Greg Abbott was criticized on Twitter after he compared the Dallas Cowboys football team's defense to the Texas border.

The Cowboys lost 20 to 26 points in a Sunday evening match against the New Orleans Saints. Disappointed with the team's performance, Abbott said the Cowboys' defense was "more porous than the Texas border" on Twitter.

The tweet was retweeted 2,591 times and favorited 1,888 times as of Tuesday afternoon.

Users on Twitter were both amused and angered about Abbott's tweet. Linda Kramer said, "spoken like a true proud governor of his state," while alexhogan said, "I guess you would know about the porous border. Wasn't that a campaign promise?"

Keith Smith said, "Don't listen to them, Governor. Liberals don't like football anyway. It's too violent and competitive for them," and Kenan Davis said, "One of the most disgusting retweets I've ever seen, but alright."

Other users called out Abbott's mistake in tagging the wrong Twitter handle -- @Cowboy, which belongs to a bass player unrelated to the football team.
