FOX LAKE, Ill., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- An Illinois police officer killed in September was shot twice with his own gun after struggling with the suspects in his death, investigators said.

Fox Lake Police Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz's body was found Sept. 1 after he reported following three suspicious men in a remote village south of the Wisconsin state line. A manhunt ensued but authorities were unable to make arrests or identify any suspects in the killing.

Investigators recovered nine DNA samples from the scene. According to Major Crimes Task Force Commander George Filenko, one of the samples identifies a male. All samples will be submitted to a national database of offenders to try to find a match.

WREX reported gun-powder tests were inconclusive but that the gun that shot Gliniewicz could have been close to him or even in his hands. Evidence has been found of a struggle between Gliniewicz and a suspect taking place prior to his death.

No additional details about the investigation have been released.
