WASHINGTON, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Several conservation groups launched a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign Tuesday targeting four Republican senators who have voted against the Obama administration's landmark plan to reduce carbon pollution.

The League of Conservation Voters, the Sierra Club, the NRDC Action Fund and Environmental Defense Fund are targeting Sens. Richard Burr of North Carolina, Rob Portman of Ohio, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin with a total of five ads highlighting their votes against the Clean Power Plan, which is aimed at curbing carbon pollution.

The plan targets existing coal-burning power plants nationwide to cut carbon emissions by 32 percent before 2030 against 2005 levels.

"Unfortunately, Sens. Burr, Portman, Toomey, and Johnson have joined in by fighting to allow the big polluters to continue pumping unlimited amounts of carbon pollution into our air," they said, citing droughts, wildfires, storms and other effects of climate change that show that "these senators need to start placing public health and safety above the profits of corporate polluters."

The ads will run on television in each state and online.
